"King ALI" is the 7th Mixed Media painting by Paulie X in the 'Black Kings' Art Series.
Depicted in this painting, is Boxing Legend - Muhammad Ali, as he defeated Sonny Liston for the 2nd time in May 1965 to retain his world heavy weight boxing champion title, in a highly charged re-match after defeating Sonny Liston in a major upset in February 1964 to win the World Heavy Weight title.
ALI epitomises the struggle of the Black Man (used here in an 'agenda' manner)… success through resilience and never giving up.
Never being told who you are by anyone...
Letting the world know who you are...
Writing you own narrative...
Writing your name in the hiStory books...
Getting hit again and again and getting back up...
Not letting anyone knock you down and keep you down...
Effortlessly and Gracefully doing the amazing and being an amazing Black Man.
Against all odds!
This image speaks to me and is such a strong, powerful visual of determination, courage and self-belief.
Stylistically, I have chosen to leave most of it especially on Ali scribbly, with visible sketch lines in pencil and ink adding to the effect of raw passion and unbridled emotion captured in the image.
Charcoal and Acrylic highlights have been used for a high contrast, layered, painterly effect to give the image a rich depth and juxtapose a balance between the defeated Liston lying on the canvas, and the powerful, victorious KING ALI, remonstrating over his once again defeated opponent.
"I am the greatest! I'm the greatest thing that ever lived. I don't have a mark on my face, and I upset Sonny Liston, and I just turned twenty-two years old. I must be the greatest"
