_____________
This powerful piece represents earth at night as seen from space.
The source imagery is from an actual picture taken by NASA as observed in 2016 with half the globe over the Americas cast in shadow.
Stylistically, I have retained my mostly minimalist, painterly style using as few colours as possible. I have painted this with two types of acrylic using a special highly light-absorbent acrylic black pigment to represent the deep darkness of space and the dark areas of the earth shrouded in the shadow.
The night lights give a very interesting representation of human settlement across the globe and how that is changing over time.
There are several motivations for this piece, with an underlying sentiment guiding the observer towards unity over division... global unrest, wars, racism, misogyny, climate emergencies and the irresponsible behaviours that have led us to where we are as a species today.
They are heart-breaking!
We all have a responsibility to take a step back every now and then and realise that this one home is all we've got and “we're all together in this”.
The accompanying poem I wrote below fully expresses my state of mind when I painted this... when I painted US.
_____________
.::.
we all live here....
screw up the environment,
we're here
be racist to each other,
we're here
keep fighting each other,
we're here
together
we need to really
see things from a different perspective sometimes
we're all we got
this is Us
ALL of US!
